Opening a Bank Account in Portugal

Opening a Portuguese bank account is one of the essential early steps after getting your NIF. You will need it for receiving salary, paying rent, setting up utilities, and most official transactions. The good news: it is more straightforward than most expats expect.

Which bank to choose?

Popular options for expats:

• Millennium BCP widely available, English-speaking staff in many branches
• Novo Banco good for expats, English service
• ActivoBank digital-first, free account, easy online opening for residents
• Caixa Geral de Depositos (CGD) state bank, reliable but slower
• For non-residents: some fintech options (Wise, Revolut) can bridge the gap while waiting

Step-by-step (in person)

1. Get your NIF first this is mandatory.
2. Gather your documents: valid ID (passport), NIF document, proof of address (rental contract or utility bill in your name in Portugal, OR home country address proof).
3. Visit a branch of your chosen bank walk-in or appointment.
4. Fill in the account opening form
5. Make a small initial deposit (varies per bank, typically EUR 50-EUR 250).
6. Receive your debit card within 5-10 working days.

Opening remotely (from abroad)

Some banks (especially Millennium BCP and Novo Banco) allow non-residents to open accounts with a fiscal representative. Online third-party services can handle this remotely, typically for EUR 300+. Ponte Portugal assists for EUR 99 with personal guidance.

Common issues

• Address proof: many newcomers don't have a utility bill yet. A rental contract works; alternatively, an Atestado de Residencia from the Junta de Freguesia (parish council) is accepted by most banks.
• Non-residents: some banks are stricter. Having your NIF as a resident (not non-resident) makes it easier.
